Ocala did it again. New data from the U.S. Census Bureau shows the Ocala metro grew 3.4% between July 2024 and July 2025. That’s the top growth rate of any metro area in the whole country, for the second year in a row.
The area now has more than 442,000 people. That’s up from 427,995 the year before. It’s up more than 66,000 since the 2020 Census. In five years, the area grew by almost 18%.
If you’re planning a move here, this growth is more than a fun fact. It changes how you should time your move. It changes what to expect from the home market. It changes what to watch for once you land.
Why Ocala, and Why Now
A few things are working together. Marion County sits close to Orlando and Tampa. But it’s far enough away to skip big-city prices. Florida also has no state income tax. That keeps drawing people from high-tax states. And the horse world has changed the local economy. The World Equestrian Center made Ocala a year-round draw, not just a winter one.
U-Haul’s growth index backs this up. So does search data from moving sites. Ocala has some of the highest one-way truck arrivals of any U.S. city in the past two years. This is not a one-time spike. It’s the third straight year Ocala has landed near the top of the national growth list.
What Fast Growth Means for Your Move
Homes move fast, but supply is holding up. In some fast-growing cities, new arrivals fight over a few listings. Ocala’s building pipeline has mostly kept pace. Dozens of new construction communities are active right now across Marion County. That gives buyers real choices, not just one option. Still, popular floor plans and good lots can sell fast. It helps to have your move date roughly set before you close on a home.
Movers book up further ahead than they used to. A few years back, you could often find a truck and crew with a week or two of notice. With this much steady demand, good dates fill fast, especially from spring through early fall. If your schedule has any flexibility, try to book four to six weeks out. That gives you more choice in date and price.
Roads and utilities are catching up, but plan around construction. Local leaders have said they’re investing in roads and infrastructure to match the growth. That’s good news long-term. But it also means more construction zones on major roads right now. If your route runs through a busy growth area, build extra time into your moving day.
Most of your new neighbors are new too. Population is up almost 18% since 2020. So a large share of the people around you just moved here as well. That has a real upside. HOA groups, local Facebook pages, and community resource lists tend to stay active. Lots of people are asking the same questions you are.
Timing Your Move Around Ocala’s Growth
Growth here isn’t spread evenly across the year. Some stretches bring heavier demand for moving help. This ties to the horse show calendar, school enrollment periods, and the wider spring and summer moving season across Florida. If your date has any flexibility, try to avoid the busiest windows. You’ll get an easier time booking a truck size and crew that fits your move.
